Walton's services address not only the initial medical rehabilitation for newly injured patients, but extend into the ongoing needs of those affected years after their initial injury.

The Spinal Cord Injury Services Team at Walton Rehabilitation Health System is comprised of a talented team of rehabilitation professionals who specialize in treating spinal cord injuries. The team guides patients with spinal injury stemming from an accident or illness through each phase of their recovery, and designs individualized rehabilitation programs to meet the specific goals of each patient.

Because all of these services are conveniently located within the Augusta area, people with spinal cord injuries are able to develop a relationship with local physicians, agencies and resource centers that can address employment, educational needs, family issues, financial concerns and other issues. Thereby, the person can maximize his or her quality of life through coordination of care and resources.

Treatment

Inpatient: Walton's inpatient rehabilitation program provides care for individuals who require 24-hour nursing care and intensive rehabilitation. Once you have been discharged from an acute care hospital and admitted to Walton, you will work with a physician-led team to develop and implement an individualized treatment plan. Services provided in our inpatient Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Program include physician services, physical and occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, psychological services, skin care, wound care, clinical dietitian services, speech therapy and neuropsychology for patients with a dual diagnosis of spinal cord injury and brain injury, patient and family education as well as the area’s only spinal cord injury support group.

Outpatient: Our outpatient rehabilitation program provides multi-service or single service therapy depending on the needs of the patient. Physical and occupational therapy, pre-driving assessments, spasticity management and the area’s only spinal cord injury support group are offered through our outpatient program.

Physician Services: Follow-up care can be provided to spinal cord injury patients through Walton Medical Associates, where specialized fellowship-trained rehabilitation physicians can develop treatment plans for the unique needs of those with spinal cord injuries, including spasticity management and Baclofen Pump management.

Behavioral Medicine: Walton psychologists are available for medical adjustment counseling to help families better understand and cope with emotional issues, depression and anxiety. Our neuropsychologists provide care for patients with a dual diagnosis of spinal cord injury and brain injury.

Seating and Equipment Clinic: Our clinic combines the expertise of a rehabilitation physician, an assistive technology certified therapist and a vendor representative, who use their specialized knowledge to assist spinal cord injury patients in selecting the appropriate seating and fit to reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers and other issues.

Assisted and Independent Living and Fitness and Leisure also complement the Spinal Cord Injury Continuum.
