Artists Go Undercover to Benefit Camp for Brain Injuries

Augusta, GA—Wouldyou still admire a Monet, if you didn’t know it was a Monet?

It’s an intriguing question that prompts discussion on how we judge not only art but one another, based on our perception of each others’ abilities. It’s also the basis for a unique fundraiser hosted by the Walton Foundation for Independence—the 6th Annual Undercover Artists Show, benefiting Camp To Be Independent, on Thursday, April 12, at 7 p.m. on the lawn of Walton Rehabilitation Health System.

More than 100 local artists, community leaders and celebrities donate original pieces of art to this annual event—with a twist. All artists’ names are hidden until the very end of the silent auction—so that each piece can be judged and bid upon based on its own merit and appeal to the bidder. “You might find that you’ve bid upon a piece by a highly recognized artist, or a complete unknown,” said Alice Salley, Development Officer at the Walton Foundation for Independence. “It’s a wonderful fundraiser for Camp To Be Independent since it shares the lesson that you can’t judge a person for a perceived disability—you never know what wonderful abilities he or she may have.”

Camp To Be Independent is the Walton Foundation’s annual camp for children and young adults ages 8 to 21 with an acquired brain injury. Taking place this year from July 15 to 20 at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, Ga., Camp TBI gives these individuals the opportunity for a true summer-camp experience—from zip lines to swimming, and horseback riding to a camp talent show—in a safe, medically supervised environment.

The 6th Annual Undercover Artists Show is presented by Medequip and is held in conjunction with the Georgia Artists With Disabilities Juried Show, on display at Walton Rehabilitation Hospital during the month of April. This year’s theme is “An Evening in Tuscany,” featuring “mARTinis,” food by Jennifer Shuford, plus music by Daddy Grace and the Henry’s. The 2012 Signature Artist is Carrie Burns Brown of Greenville, SC.

Tickets are $50. To purchase, contact the Walton Foundation for Independence at 706-826-5809 or email alsalley@wrh.org.
