Aiken Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center Brings New Specialty to Aiken Area

Aiken, SC - Aiken's first physical medicine and rehabilitation physician launched his practice when the Aiken Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center opened its doors on May 4.

Dr. John Nicholson, medical director of the new center, provides the area's first physician-directed diagnosis and treatment of injuries or related disabilities requiring rehabilitation and/or physical therapy treatment. Adolescent and adult patients with acute and chronic pain and sub-acute neurologic and orthopedic conditions will be seen.

"Our center not only offers expert disease evaluation and management, but is also rehab-oriented, and holistic in the sense that we work with the patient from diagnosis to treatment to rehab to re-entry," said Dr. Nicholson. "Our center hopes to educate both patients and care providers about other solutions for patients to live successfully when surgery is not an option."

The center provides the following services:

  • General physical medicine and rehabiitation
  • Diagnostic EMG
  • Trigger point injection
  • In-office physical therapy
  • Manual therapy
  • Joint mobilization
  • Acute neurologic and orthopedic hospital consultation
  • Sub-acute neurologic and orthopedic follow-up and rehabilitation
  • Medication and spasticity management
  • Orthopedic postoperative rehabilitation and wound care, e.g. total knee replacement
  • Non-operative management of recent or ongoing back, neck or joint problems
The center is also part of Walton Rehabilitation Health System in Augusta, Ga., and is backed by Walton's network of services, including inpatient rehabilitation services, transitional living facilities at Walton West, assisted living and residential housing at Harison Heights and Vincent Village and other services such as Walton Options for Independent Living. "We like to say that we're like Verizon," said Dennis Skelley, CEO at Walton Rehabilitation Health System. "You know the slogan—‘It's the network'. The center is an Aiken center—it's a part of the Aiken community, it is entirely staffed by people from or who live in the Aiken area—but for patients who have these very specific needs, we are pleased to offer a continuum of care through the Walton network."

In addition, Dr. Nicholson is planning to provide physical medicine and rehabilitation consultations for physicians in Aiken, and the center is planning collaborations with other medical providers in Aiken, for example, referral to other medical specialists, imaging, labwork, comprehensive rehabilitation and home health services.

"Whether you're an active professional recovering from a fall during a polo match or an aging Baby Boomer or a teenager who's been in a car accident, our goal is to provide a complete network of services to ensure that all patients with pain, neurologic and orthopedic conditions in Aiken are successfully diagnosed, treated and achieve the highest functional return," said Dr. Nicholson.

The Aiken Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center is located at 191 Centre South Blvd, Aiken. For appointments or referrals, please call 803-644-6140.
